Management
The Society is managed by its members through a Board of Directors elected annually at its annual general meeting in the spring. Its ongoing program includes the following:
Meetings:
Monthly meetings are held at 1 p.m. on the last Friday of the month (except in December, July and August) at the Routhier Community Centre, 172 Guigues Street at the corner of Cumberland in Lowertown.
The annual general meeting normally occurs in April or May and is am occasion for the board of directors to account for its conduct during the preceding year and offer an insight to its plans for the future. All members are eligible to vote for individual candidates for the board of directors.
Membership:
Membership in the Historical Society of Ottawa entitles you to participate in all the activities of the Society. For the industrious, there are numerous ways to volunteer your service and enthusiasm in the social events participated in by the HSO. There are no qualifications for membership - although the more you are interested in Ottawa's (and Bytown's) history, the more fun you'll have.
Publications:
The HSO NEWS is the bulletin of the Society, and carries news items, reports of activities, historical notes and a calendar of upcoming events. It is published four times a year.
The Bytown Pamphlets, representing the work of researchers on Ottawa's history, are published from time to time. They are free to members and available to the public for a small fee. more than seventy pamphlets have been issued to date.
Special Publications are produced occasionally, usually to accommodate larger undertakings or unique projects. Please click here to see a list of our publications that are available for purchase.
Awards:
The Colonel John By Award in History is a prize of $800, awarded annually to a student in a graduate or undergraduate history course who writes the best paper on a topic concerning the history of Ottawa or the Ottawa Valley. The recipient of the Award usually is selected by the Historical Society's board of directors.
The Algonquin College Award is a prize of $500, awarded annually to a student in the Applied Museums Studies program at Algonquin College. The recipient of the Award is selected by the society's board of directors.
Candidates for these awards are nominated by the faculty of their respective schools and the final selection is made by the Society’s board in consultation with faculty members.
The City of Ottawa Cup winner at the Ottawa Regional Historica Fair is given an award of $150 by the Society. The Fair normally is held in April of each year.
